Birmingham Youth Choir Shines on America’s Got Talent, Earns Golden Buzzer
The stage of America’s Got Talent recently witnessed a truly moving and powerful performance by the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir, hailing from Birmingham, Alabama. Their audition not only showcased immense talent but also carried a profound message about their city’s rich history and resilience.
The choir’s journey began a decade ago, spearheaded by their director, Aim Lee, who was just 18 at the time. What started as a simple idea for a school supply concert to benefit local children quickly blossomed into a continuous and thriving musical endeavor due to overwhelming community interest. When asked about their motivation for joining America’s Got Talent, Aim Lee expressed a deep desire to highlight the talent within Birmingham, a city that, despite its vibrant history, often faces criticism.
She passionately spoke of Birmingham’s significant role in the civil rights movement, specifically mentioning the historic 16th Street Baptist Church and the tragic 1963 bombing that brought international attention to the struggle for civil rights.
The choir then delivered a breathtaking rendition of “Joyful, Joyful,” captivating the audience and judges alike with their powerful vocals and emotive performance. Following their song, the judges were visibly impressed. One judge commented, “That was… that was big.” The same judge went on to praise their dedication, stating, “I could see and hear how much work went into this. Every single one of you played the perfect part.
We had lead vocals, we had emotion.” Expressing his honor at their presence on the show’s 20th anniversary, the judge then declared, “And I’m so honored that you would come here on our 20th anniversary and in return I want to give you something.” It was at this moment that Simon Cowell pressed the coveted Golden Buzzer, sending the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir directly to the live shows. After the golden moment, Simon Cowell affirmed their future, telling the choir, “This is just the beginning. You’re big now, it’s going to get bigger, right?” He also added, “That was one of my favorite ever.” The choir’s performance was a testament to their talent, dedication, and the spirit of their community.
